english description:
With 40 plates. Loose in original wrapper, chemise, and slipcase.
Dedicated publisher’s copy on Vélin d’Arches, printed for Henri Jonquières and, like the copies of the special edition, featuring the linocut “Pigeonneau” (Bloch 326) in reddish-brown on blue handmade paper (total print run 2,226). – Imprint with Autograph signature and a small color drawing by Picasso, dated „Cannes, 1er Avril 1957.“ – First edition featuring the marginal drawings. – In 1943, Picasso had drawn these sketches in a copy of “Buffon,” published by Fabiani in 1942, alongside his etchings. The copy was later owned by Dora Maar. – At the beginning is the facsimile dedication page for Dora Maar; at the end is Picasso’s facsimile “Explicit.” – »The publication served as a facsimile of Picasso’s 1942 volume of Buffon’s Histoire naturelle that he presented to his mistress, Dora Maar, on 17 January 1943. Picasso embellished her copy with forty inventive and witty drawings. The deluxe edition of this facsimile was published by Galerie Berggruen and included one of Picasso’s earliest experiments in linocut. He was soon to become one of the greatest innovators and practitioners of this medium.« (Robert Flynn Johnson, in: LC)
