Beschreibung

Arntz 405–412, jeweils a und d. – Arp-Hagenbach 365. – LC 2001 138. – Monod 525. – A&B 14

38,5 : 29,3 cm. [56] Seiten, 8 Radierungen (Suite).

english description:
With eight full-sheet etchings. Loose double-leaves in an original half-parchment chemise with a gilt title on the spine and a gold-embossed vignette on the cover. In the original slipcase.

One of 100 Roman-numbered special edition copies on Richard-de-Bas vellum (total print run of 600) and including the very rare extra suite of all etchings with gray overprints. – Signed by the artist in the colophon. – Arp’s original plan to overprint the etchings with color woodcuts was not realized. The large-format etchings feature a beautiful plate tone and are thus much more nuanced in their “color effect” than other Arp prints. – »The later work of Jean Arp is characterized by a simple yet sensuous reduction of form. The sixteen [sic!] etchings that Arp created to illustrate his own poetry retain the playfulness of his early Dada work but also an undercurrent of mystery that is characteristic of his surrealist imagery. The idiosyncratically wiped plate tone on the prints and the use of gray as a second color on six of the works is highly effective.« (Robert Flynn Johnson, in: LC)
The slipcase is slightly stained and has some chips. – The parchment on the spine is brittle and faded. – The cover and the untrimmed edges of the pages on the sides have some foxing.
