Edition Kaldewey 48.

english description:
Includes twelve inkjet prints based on watercolors by Gunnar A. Kaldewey. Loose double sheets in their original buckskin cover, bound together in a chemise and slipcase (Judi Conant, Guildhall).

Edition Kaldewey 48. – One of seven copies of the “Deluxe Edition” in a leather slipcase, with three additional signed watercolors included (total edition of 47). – Signed and numbered by the artist in the colophon. – The frontispiece is designed in a collage-like manner using strips of Tibetan paper and orange-colored paper that covers the image, reminiscent of Tibetan tanka scrolls; the Tibetan text was printed using metal cuts. – »This is Kaldewey’s second Tibetan book (after Edition Kaldewey 26), with parallel texts printed in both Tibetan and English (in the translation of C.C. Chang). Milarepa (I040-I123) played an important role in the foundation of Kagyu Buddhism and is one of Tibet’s most popular poets and philosophers. Legend tells that he spent twelve years of his life alone in a cave, eating only nettles till he turned completely green. The song here chosen from the large collection is ›How to Gain Happiness and Avoid Suffering.‹ The short passages consist of two antithetical parts, the first explaining how to be ›ever joyful,‹ and the second warning which behavior makes one ›ever sad.‹ (…) The ›humble‹ appearance of the brownish materials fits the ascetic ideals of Milarepa. The watercolors for this – and all other books with Kaldewey’s watercolors – were painted in Paris, where Kaldewey has lived during the winter months since 2004.« (Von Lucius, p. 295).
