One of 150 copies on Montval mould-made paper (total print run of 172). – 15 of the original 30 lithographs were selected by the artist as early as 1945 and printed on the hand press of Mourlot Frères; some were dated on the stone. – The twelve poems by Eugène Guillevic (1907–1997) were not written until 1950, and were printed by Joseph Zichieri in Paris. – The French poet contributed to numerous artist’s books and received a number of awards, including the Prix Goncourt de la poésie and the Grand prix national de poésie. – »The art of Jean Dubuffet is infused with a sense of morbid unease. He depicts the world as a messy and chaotic environment. Both sophisticated and, at the same time, deliberately crude in his drawing style, Dubuffet created an art distinct from other artists of the postwar period. ›Les Murs‹ illustrates Dubuffet’s interest in l’art brut and reveals the inspiration he derived from the art of the insane.« (Robert Flynn Johnson, in: LC)
