Eins von 170 Exemplaren auf Van Gelder Velin mit dem Wasserzeichen »Parallelement« (Gesamtauflage 200). – Eins der seltenen Exemplare mit dem abweichenden ersten Doppelblatt mit der zusätzlichen Lithographie in Braun. – Beilage: Werbeprospekt auf Auflagenpapier, Doppelblatt mit zwei Lithographien und zwei Holzstichvignetten sowie der ursprünglichen Titelvignette (Signet der Imprimerie Nationale, die für die eigentliche Auflage wegen des freizügigen Inhalt des Buches ersetzt wurde).
Ambroise Vollard (1867–1939) beschloss »im Bewußtsein seiner eigenen literarischen Grenzen« (Karole Vail, in: Jentzsch), nicht Schriftsteller, sondern Verleger zu werden. Als erstes Buch verlegte er »Parallèlement«, Verlaines freizügige Dichtung, mit den von Bonnard erbetenen Lithographien, die auf dessen Wunsch in Rosarot gedruckt wurden. Trotz des Skandals, den dieses Buch erregt, gilt es als eines der schönsten Bücher, das je erschienen ist und als Inkunabel der modernen Buchillustration. – »›Parallèlement‹ ist das erste große Malerbuch des 20. Jahrhunderts und gilt zu Recht als Hauptwerk unter den Illustrationen von Bonnard.« (Wolfgang Classen). – Schönes, unbeschnittenes Exemplar.
»It is hardly surprising that Ambroise Vollard thought of Bonnard to illustrate Verlaine’s ›Parallèlement‹. […] Bonnard invented a very free style of composition to complement Verlaine’s poems; the lithographs stray into and around the verses themselves and curve out again into the margins, voluptuous and tender images whose powers of suggestion miraculously enhance the poet’s art. ›I wanted the lithographs to be in pink,‹ the painter was to say, ›because it allowed me to convey more of the poetic atmosphere of Verlaine.‹ Unfortunately the book was a total disaster when it appeared in September 1900. It was criticized for its freedom of composition and its unconventional layout, and even for its use of lithographs at a time when wood engraving was still preferred. Vollard, however, was delighted and, far from discouraged, commissioned a second book.« (Bouvet).«

Original printed wrappers with cover vignette after Bonnard. In a modern leather chemise with colored appliqués and a cloth slipcase with a parchment spine label (signed: O’Brien Binder, Auckland).
One of 170 copies on Van Gelder Velin paper with the watermark „Parallel Element“ (total edition of 200). – One of the rare copies with the differing first double leaf featuring the additional lithograph in brown. – Enclosure: advertising brochure on edition paper, double leaf with two lithographs and two woodcut vignettes, as well as the original title vignette (the logo of the Imprimerie Nationale, which was replaced for the actual edition due to the book’s explicit content). Ambroise Vollard had sent the text to be printed at the Imprimerie Nationale, whose authorities had only the title of the book and had assumed they were printing a geometry textbook. After the French government uncovered that the book contained depictions of lesbian imagery, the book was immediately recalled and Vollard was forced replace the original vignette of the Imprimerie nationale bearing the image of the French Republic with another vignette by Bonnard. This lot includes the replacement vignette by Bonnard on the cover.
Some light foxing, all overall a nice copy. – Adhesive binding a bit loose.
