K. Ogden. – »For this frontispiece, Brancusi created one of the most abstract portraits of the twentieth century. Rebuffed by Picasso, the publishers Harry and Caresse Crosby selected Brancusi, who knew Joyce, as their second choice to execute a likeness of the author. On receiving a copy of this volume, Joyce’s brother Stanislaus remarked after scrutinizing the portrait how much his brother James had changed since their last meeting.« (Logan Collection). – »This sole example of the sculptor Brancusi’s graphic contribution to a book is as important for the reproduction of his drawing as for the publication of Joyce’s fragments from his not-yet-completed masterpiece Finnegans Wake. For their Black Sun Press, Harry and Caresse Crosby wanted Picasso to draw Joyce’s portrait for the frontispiece, but he refused.
